Scrapbook Layout: Pool Dedication

The Story: Mr. P attended the dedication ceremony for the new pool at his high school.  He played water polo and swam all throughout high school.  The pool was named for his water polo coach who introduced the sport to the area and coached at the school for decades.  When the ceremony was over, Mr. P and other fellow alumni played each other in the new pool with Coach refereeing.

Dates on newspapers:  I always jot down the date on newspaper pieces I save.  When I add them to my scrapbook, I hand write the date near the story.

On not being present: This is one of the few events I’ve scrapbooked where I wasn’t actually there.  I couldn’t go to the event and relied on Mr. P’s family saving newspapers and the program.  I talked with him about his history with Coach before I wrote the captions.

By the time I made this page, Coach had passed away.  He was only 65 and had just retired.  He was such an instrumental person in my husband’s life and his loss was really hard.  I’m really glad I saved everything from this event so we can show our kids later.

Scrapbook Layout: All-Star Game

The Story: San Francisco hosted the MLB All-Star game in 2007.  We didn’t actually go to the game, but we participated in some of the activities.  The ballpark was five years old at the time and it was a big deal to host the game.

Printed Ticket: I’ve gone on record before about being sad that we print more tickets at home because I rarely put them in my scrapbook.  They just don’t look as cool.  However, this time, I included one of our Fanfest tickets and it worked really well with the design (after I cut off the sponsor messages and whatever other fine print they manage to fill an 8.5×11″ page with).

Team Logo: I traced and cut this out with my Silhouette.  Again, not making it available for download because it’s not my intellectual property to give away.  If you have questions about how to trace sports logos, let me know!

Patterned Paper: I rarely, if ever, include patterned paper in sports layouts.  I don’t know what’s coming over me!

Scrapbook Layout: 109th Big Game

The Story:  The annual rivalry football game between Cal and Stanford is called The Big Game and it has been played for over 100 years.  I haven’t missed one since 2000.

Big Numbers: The rest of the page is quite simple, so I experimented with BIG BIG numbers.  I love it!  I layered some blue under the gold letters to make them stand out.  Details, my friends, details.

Handwriting Overload: Do you ever have one of those moments when you’re writing a story and it turns out way longer than you’d planed?  I meant for the handwriting to tuck neatly under the newspaper photo but it got out of control!  But you know my rules, when it’s story versus design, the story always wins.

Scrapbook Layout: 2006 Football Season

The Story: Chronicling Cal’s 2006 football season.  This included the trip to Tennessee that I posted earlier about, but that was so epic it deserved its own layout.  These layouts cover the season generally and showcase little bits I want to remember (like that time Marshawn Lynch, now of the Seattle Seahawks, drove an injury cart out onto the field to celebrate an overtime win).

Reusing a Design: This design is very very similar to the design I used in 2005.  It’s very challenging to include tickets, a fridge magnet, clippings, and photos all onto one page, especially when the tickets have to be lined up horizontally.  I liked the design so hey, why not?

Season Specs: I’ve included a win-loss record and other key information for the season in every football layout since I became a Cal fan.  The seasons run together in my mind and I like how I can instantly get a feeling for that year, who the coach was, and who the quarterback was.

Scrapbook Layout: Big Game

The Story: the annual football game between my alma mater and her arch rival.  This is the game we throw the tailgate for and this page sits opposite the layout for the tailgate.  It’s actually called The Big Game in case you wanted to know.

Repeating the Headline: I liked the headline so much from the tailgate that I repeated it here.  It makes everything matchy matchy.

Not Great Photos: I don’t have great photos from the game, but three was enough and I sized them to work with the ticket and newspaper pieces.

Newspaper: There is one newspaper photo I cut out plus a long headline that runs up the side.

Stripes: I reused the stripe motif that I have on other layouts from this football season (here and here).  It ties everything together nicely!

Scrapbook Layouts: 2005 Football Season

The Story: Another year and there’s another football season to document.  It’s challenging to come up with ways to display season tickets, a fridge magnet, photos and other bits of ephemera.

Stats: I designed a little card with the season win-loss record, the name of the coach, and the names of the quarterbacks.  I’ve been including this information on my football pages since I started going to games in 2000 and it adds great context.

Lots of Newspaper: Every year I decide to save different things.  This year I had a lot of newspaper articles to work with.  I spaced them throughout the pages and they cover some very key events.  Hindsight is always fabulous because I already know that these articles would have big implications a few years later.

Write in the Dates: When I use newspaper articles, somewhere around the article I’ll write the date in very small writing.  It’s probably the archivist in me, but I like to have record of when the piece was published.

Vertical Stripes: I added some flair by cutting eighth-inch stripes out of blue, gold, and white cardstock and glued them down the side of the page.  I like how it adds a little something without being distracting.

That’s it, a whopping 4 layouts for the season (not including the Big Game, that will come later!).

Scrapbook Layout: Giants Games

Mr. P would like me to inform you that pitchers and catchers report next week.  Just in case you didn’t know.

Keeping it Interesting: As long as we still keep going to Giants games, I’ll still be coming up with a new way to scrapbook it every year.  It’s kind of refreshing actually — I know I can try something different this year without it being the end-all-be-all.  There’s always next year!

Small Headline: I struggled with this page for a while.  It clicked when I realized I didn’t need a huge headline.  I designed a small one and glued it over top of one of the photos.

Scrapbooking an Autograph: That’s Omar Vizquel’s autograph on the back of my ticket.  He was a great player and I hope he makes it into the Hall of Fame someday (he won 11 Gold Gloves).  I thought for a while about whether I should scrapbook it or keep it in some safe place.  Said safe place would be in a box in the closet and not on display.  Whatever.  If it’s in the scrapbook people may actually see it.

Team Logo: I traced it and cut it out with the Silhouette program.  I’m not making it available here for download because it’s trademarked but I believe my personal use of it is okay.  You can trace your own sports logos using Silhouette Studio, just don’t try to give them away or sell them (this isn’t legal advice, just my opinion).

Scrapbook Layout: 107th Big Game

Time for another football scrapbook layout!

Inspiration: My own.  I had to design this around the newspaper and the ticket.  Everything else neatly fell into place.

Why I documented this:  It’s the Big Game (!), practically a pilgrimage to anyone who follows Cal or Stanford football.

I’m really pleased that I was able to get everything on one page.  Maybe it was because I didn’t have a ton of good photos?  My last Big Game layout (link below) was 2 pages.

For this layout, I cut out the newspaper picture (yep, Aaron Rodgers) and then the score from elsewhere in the issue.  I sized the pictures to fit the leftover space next to the picture.

There’s more football!

These are the second two pages that come after the ones I posted a couple of days ago.  There isn’t a headline because these are just part of the set.

Same theme: keepsake heavy.  This is where I put our actual season tickets (see left page at bottom).  I also added some text summarizing the season.

Scrapbook Layout: Football Season, Part 1

Are you ready for some football?

I hope so, I have a lot of football to cover in some pages that have a lot of stuff going on.

Football seasons are keepsake-heavy.  There is no way around it and I like it that way.  It’s a challenge to get everything on the page and have it look cohesive.  Still, I love the busy look because football season is a busy part of our lives!

A feature I like to have on any football season page is a box that shows the win-loss record and who the coach and quarterback were.  It took me for-ev-er to find a combination of fonts I liked.

I’m trying something new here: instead of trying to explain what each thing is in the picture, I created an image that explains it.  It’s quite a lot of stuff!

What do you think?  Yes, it’s a lot!
