Ushuaia Snapshots

Ushuaia Argentina Snapshots 2013 by Natalie Parker

We traveled to Argentina on the way to Antarctica.  One year later, I’m sharing my snapshots with you.

Ushuaia is a small town of 56,000 and is the capital of Tierra del Fuego.  It’s also the southernmost city in Argentina and where you pick up cruises to Antarctica.

We left the oppressive heat of Buenos Aires and when our plane landed, it felt like we were in another world (all cliches aside).  This is one of those locations that makes you stop and realize you’re in a far off place.

The city is tucked into the Andes.

They call it “fin del mundo” or the end of the world.

Again on my hunt to see Pope Francis paraphernalia.  We didn’t see as much as I hoped but this caricature totally made up for it.

We passed some time in a chocolate shop and bought some chocolate Santas to have for Christmas.

We took a day trip out of the city.  The winds are so strong that the trees grow sideways into Dr. Seuss shapes.  The landscape was breathtaking.

This tree in particular is called La Bandera — the flag.

We arrived at this remote area.  So quiet and peaceful.

We hopped a boat to an island to visit some Magellanic penguins.

The beach was filled with penguins who were either too young or old to be nesting (not kidding, you can tell the older guys because they’re grey).  Everyone else was nesting and we got to see babies!

Whenever I see penguins I’m overcome with the urge to chat with them like they have any idea what I’m saying.  These were Argentine-resident penguins and I’m sure they don’t speak English.  Maybe Spanish?

Mr. P checks out a whale skeleton after we finished our penguin visit.

Back in Ushuaia, my friend and I had some local sparkling wine (we’re on vacation and why not, but then again, one never needs a reason to drink sparkling).

Mr. P opted for a local beer.  How local?  Check out La Bandera on the label — the tree I took a picture of earlier.

We climbed the hill to a tiny little restaurant where we had local seafood and enjoyed the view of the Beagle Channel.

After our meal, we walked back to our hotel and had this excellent view of the harbor.  We didn’t notice the floating Christmas tree until that very moment.

The next day, we took off on our greatest adventure.  Our time in Argentina is easily overshadowed by what was ahead, so I’m glad I took the time to share it with you separately.  I hope you enjoyed it!

  1. What a great day! Sometimes those little “sidetrips” really are as good as the “main attraction” on a big vacation. I would’ve loved a day like that too. So glad you shared it too 🙂
